How to fix an AI-written novel manuscript, step by step

AI drafts tend to repeat themselves, lose track of details and make every character sound alike. Import the draft, get whole-book notes, fix continuity against a Story Bible, then run edit passes chapter by chapter.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Import the draft

Open Import a manuscript, upload the file (.docx, .pdf, .epub, .txt and more) and choose Import as Chapters.

  2. 2

Build a Story Bible from it

Choose Bible in the action bar and ask Paige to add the main characters, places and plot threads. Correct what she gets wrong, then Lock what is settled.

  3. 3

    Get whole-book notes first

Press Edit in the editor toolbar, open the Book Report tab and press Run Book Report (paid plans) for notes on the whole book. Fix structure and pacing before polishing sentences.

  4. 4

    Check continuity

On paid plans, use the Continuity tab to check each chapter against the Story Bible. AI drafts often change eye colours, ages and timelines between chapters.

  5. 5

    Run edit passes

On the Edit Pass tab, press Run edit pass on each chapter for repetition, crutch words and prose notes. Apply the suggestions you agree with and dismiss the rest.

  6. 6

Ban the tics you keep seeing

Add the phrases that keep coming back to Banned Words & Phrases in Settings, so anything Paige writes from here avoids them.

  7. 7

    Rewrite what still reads flat

In the action bar choose This chapter, then Revise, and ask for one specific change, such as "show the argument as a scene instead of summing it up". Finish with your own read-through.

What usually goes wrong in AI drafts

Knowing the usual problems tells you where to look first.

  • The same phrases and sentence shapes come back chapter after chapter.
  • Details drift: names, ages, timelines, who knows which secret.
  • Every character talks the same way.
  • Big moments are summed up instead of played out as scenes.
  • Conflicts resolve too quickly and too neatly.

Editing does not change where the text came from

Amazon KDP asks authors to disclose AI-generated text even after substantial editing. Revising the draft makes it a better book; it does not remove the need to disclose. This guide is about making the book good, not about hiding how it was made.

For ghostwriters and editors

More clients now arrive with an AI draft and ask for a human pass. Give each client’s draft its own project, so their characters and notes never mix with another client’s book.

Questions

Can an AI-generated book be edited into a good one?

Yes, but it takes work. Fix structure and continuity first, then repetition and voice. Sentence polish comes last.

Does editing an AI draft make it human-written?

Not for disclosure. KDP treats text an AI tool produced as AI-generated even after substantial edits. Your edits can still matter for copyright: the US Copyright Office says human changes to and arrangement of AI output can be protected.

Where should I start with a long AI draft?

With whole-book notes. A Book Report shows the structural problems, and fixing those first saves you from polishing chapters you later cut.
