Chrome extension for fiction writers

Paige, right beside your draft

Click the Paige icon and the full WriteWithPaige app opens in a side panel, beside any page. Select text anywhere and send it to Paige. In Notion, Novelcrafter and other writing sites, she also marks filter words, adverbs propping up dialogue tags and close echoes as you type. Those checks run inside your browser, and what you type stays there.

For Chrome on a computer. The underlines work without an account.

Mara felt the cold before she saw the door. It hung open on one hinge. “We should go,” Theo said nervously. The kitchen light flickered over the kitchen table, over the letter neither of them wanted to read.

She read it twice, and then once more, slowly, as if the words might decide to change if she only gave them enough time to.

What it marks as you type

Four habits that flatten a scene. Paige marks them and leaves the call to you. Nothing changes until you say so.

Filter words

She felt, he noticed, they watched. Words that put a camera between the reader and the scene. Paige marks them, and you decide which ones go.

Adverbs propping up dialogue tags

“Stay,” she said quietly. When the adverb does the work the line should do, the tag gets marked.

Close echoes

The same word twice within a few lines. The kind you stop hearing on the fourth read.

Phrases you have banned

A built-in list of worn-out phrasing to start with. Sign in, and the phrases you banned in WriteWithPaige follow you to every site.

Instant checks, and Paige when you ask

Instant checks, on your computer

The four checks above run inside Chrome as you type. Your text isn’t sent anywhere for them. They work without an account, and they never count against a daily limit.

With a free account

  • Paige beside any page: the side panel is the full WriteWithPaige app, with your projects and chats. Select text on a page, right-click and choose Send to Paige, and it lands in her chat, ready for your question.

  • Deep check: start one from the top of the side panel, and Paige reads the page for what a rule can’t catch, like a sentence a reader would have to read twice.

  • The rewrite bar: select a passage and pick Tighten, Smooth flow, Fix grammar or Punch up dialogue. The rewrite replaces your selection.

These use your plan’s daily allowance. Free accounts get a few each day.

What leaves your browser, and when

  • The instant checks: nothing. They run on your computer.
  • Rewrites and deep checks: only when you click. A rewrite sends the passage you selected and a few sentences around it. A deep check sends about a page of text near your cursor. It goes to WriteWithPaige so Paige can write the edit. We send back the edit and don’t keep the text.
  • Send to Paige: the text you selected goes into Paige’s chat in the side panel. Nothing else on the page goes with it.
  • The side panel: it’s the WriteWithPaige site itself, with the same account and the same data as using the site in a tab. Your chats there are saved in your account, like any other chat with Paige.
  • Your sign-in: the extension knows you’re signed in because you’re signed in to writewithpaige.com in Chrome. It reads nothing from your accounts on other sites, and it doesn’t collect your browsing history.

We never sell what you write. The full details are in our privacy policy.

Questions writers ask

Does it work in Google Docs?

Partly. Open Paige in the side panel beside your Doc and paste a passage into her chat. Google Docs draws its pages in a way extensions can’t read or underline, so you won’t see marks there. To edit a whole manuscript, import the .docx into WriteWithPaige.

Which writing apps does it work in?

The side panel and Send to Paige work beside any page. The underlines work in Notion, Novelcrafter, Atticus, Campfire, Dabble, LivingWriter, Reedsy, World Anvil, Ellipsus and Wattpad, as soon as it is installed. In the AO3 and FanFiction.net posting boxes, the rewrite bar and Send to Paige work. On any other site, open the side panel and turn Paige on for that site.

Do I need an account? Is it free?

The instant checks are free and work without an account. Deep check, the rewrite bar and chatting with Paige in the side panel need a free WriteWithPaige account. Free accounts get a few of those each day, and paid plans raise the daily limit.

Is my writing sent anywhere?

Not for the instant checks. They run on your computer. Only text you select and send, or ask Paige to check, goes to WriteWithPaige. A rewrite sends the passage you selected and a few sentences around it. A deep check sends about a page of text near your cursor. The side panel is the WriteWithPaige site itself, so it works just like using the site in a tab. We never sell your writing. The privacy policy has the details.

Will it change my text without asking?

No. Underlines only mark things. Your text changes when you apply a suggestion or pick a rewrite for a passage you selected.

Does it work for fanfiction?

Yes. Wattpad’s editor gets underlines and rewrites. In the AO3 and FanFiction.net posting boxes, the rewrite bar and Send to Paige work. If you draft somewhere else first, like Notion, you get every check there.

Can it find repeated words, or “show, don’t tell” problems?

Both, in a narrow way. It marks a word used twice within a few lines, and it marks filter words like “she felt” and “he noticed”, the habit behind a lot of “show, don’t tell” notes. For a read of a whole scene, use Deep check, or run an edit pass in the workspace.

Is it a grammar checker?

Not mainly. General grammar checkers were built for email and school papers, so they flag the fragments and loose dialogue fiction runs on. The instant checks here look for fiction habits instead. When you do want grammar fixed, select the passage and pick Fix grammar.

How do I remove it?

Right-click the WriteWithPaige button in Chrome’s toolbar and choose Remove from Chrome. Your WriteWithPaige account and projects stay as they are.
