How to use the WriteWithPaige Chrome extension (Paige for Chrome)

Paige for Chrome marks filter words, adverb-heavy dialogue tags, close echoes and your banned phrases as you type in Notion, Novelcrafter and other writing sites. Select text to rewrite it, or open the full WriteWithPaige app in Chrome’s side panel. The underlines are free and need no account.

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Install it from the Chrome Web Store

On a computer, open the Paige for Chrome listing at chromewebstore.google.com/detail/writewithpaige-fiction-wr/pfjmahingplcccpjoopfkmheaknaamph and click Add to Chrome. You can also reach it from Settings in WriteWithPaige: open “Help & Support” and choose “Paige for Chrome”.

  2. Step 2: Pin the Paige icon

Click Chrome’s puzzle-piece extensions button and pin Paige, so her icon stays in the toolbar.

  3. Step 3: Write as usual

Open a supported writing site such as Notion or Novelcrafter and start typing. Underlines appear on filter words, adverb tags, close echoes and banned phrases. Click an underline to see why it was marked.

  4. Step 4: Rewrite a passage

Select some text. The rewrite bar appears with “Tighten”, “Smooth flow”, “Fix grammar” and “Punch up dialogue”. Pick one and the rewrite replaces your selection.

  5. Step 5: Open Paige beside the page

Click the Paige icon in the toolbar. WriteWithPaige opens in Chrome’s side panel, with your projects and chats. Sign in if asked.

What the underlines catch

The instant checks look for fiction habits, not email grammar. They leave your fragments and loose dialogue alone. Underlines only mark things. Your text changes only when you apply a suggestion.

Filter words
She felt, he noticed, they watched. Words that put a camera between the reader and the scene.
Adverbs propping up dialogue tags
“Stay,” she said quietly. The adverb is doing the work the line should do.
Close echoes
The same word twice within a few lines.
Phrases you banned
A built-in list to start. Sign in, and your WriteWithPaige banned words and phrases follow you.

Free without an account, and what needs one

The underlines run inside Chrome on your computer. They need no account, send nothing anywhere and never count against a daily limit.

The rewrite bar, “Deep check” and chatting with Paige in the side panel need a free WriteWithPaige account. They use your daily allowance, like any request to Paige. Paid plans have a bigger allowance (Plus is 12x free).

The side panel is the full app

Click the Paige icon and the WriteWithPaige app opens in Chrome’s side panel, next to whatever page you are on. It is the same site with the same projects, Story Bible and chats, so anything you do there saves to your account.

If you are not signed in, the panel says “Chatting with Paige here needs a WriteWithPaige account.” Tap “Create a free account”, or “Sign in” if you have one.

“Deep check” in the side panel reads a page of text near your cursor for things a rule can’t catch.

  • Notifications can’t be switched on inside the side panel. Turn them on at writewithpaige.com in a normal tab.

Send to Paige from any website

Select text on any page, right-click and choose “Send to Paige”. The text lands in her chat in the side panel, ready for your question.

Try typing

“Does this scene drag? Point to the slowest paragraph.”

Try typing

“Make this dialogue sound more like Mara in my Story Bible.”

Try typing

“Give me three stronger last lines for this chapter.”

Where it works

What works depends on the site.

Any page
The side panel and Send to Paige.
Notion, Novelcrafter, Atticus, Campfire, Dabble, LivingWriter, Reedsy, World Anvil, Ellipsus, Wattpad
Underlines, fixes and rewrites, as soon as it is installed.
AO3 and FanFiction.net posting boxes
The rewrite bar and Send to Paige.
Google Docs
No underlines. Open the side panel and paste a passage into Paige’s chat.
Any other site
Open the side panel and turn Paige on for that site. Chrome asks your permission once.

Why there are no underlines in Google Docs

Google Docs draws its pages in a way extensions can’t read or mark. So in Docs, open the side panel beside your document and paste a passage into Paige’s chat instead.

To edit a whole manuscript that lives in Docs, download it as a .docx and import it into WriteWithPaige. See the import guide.

Pausing Paige on a site

To take a break from the marks on one site, pause Paige for that site from the side panel. She stays paused there until you switch her back on. Other sites keep working.

What gets sent, and when

The instant checks send nothing. Text goes to WriteWithPaige only when you click: a rewrite sends your selection and a few sentences around it, a deep check sends about a page near your cursor, and Send to Paige sends only the text you selected.

The extension uses your writewithpaige.com sign-in. It reads nothing from other sites’ accounts and does not collect your browsing history.

Questions

Is Paige for Chrome free?

Yes. The underlines are free and need no account. Rewrites, Deep check and the side panel chat need a free account and use your daily allowance.

Does it work on my phone or iPad?

No. Chrome extensions only run in Chrome on a computer. On a phone, use the WriteWithPaige app or website, where the editor has its own quick rewrite bubble.

Does it work in Google Docs?

Partly. You won’t see underlines in Docs. Open the side panel beside your Doc and paste a passage into Paige’s chat.

Will it change my text without asking?

No. Underlines only mark things. Your text changes only when you apply a suggestion or pick a rewrite for text you selected.

Is it a grammar checker?

Not mainly. The instant checks look for fiction habits. When you want grammar fixed, select the passage and pick “Fix grammar”.

Why does the side panel ask me to sign in?

Chatting with Paige needs a WriteWithPaige account so your chats and projects save. Sign in once and the panel remembers you.
