Dante walked to the door and opened it. Three men stood in the hallway. Black jackets. Cold expressions. Debt collectors. The largest stepped forward. "Payment day." Dante crossed his arms. "We need more time." The man's expression didn't change. "You've already had more time." His mother appeared behind him. "We'll pay," she said quietly. "Soon." The collector pulled out a tablet and glanced at the screen. "Current balance has increased." Dante's jaw tightened. Of course it had. Interest. Fees. Penalties. Every month the number grew larger. It didn't matter how many Gates he entered. The debt always seemed to grow faster. The collector looked at Mia. "That's the girl?" Dante immediately stepped between them. The collector smirked. "Relax." Nobody relaxed. The man slipped the tablet away. "You have three days." "That's impossible." "Not my problem." The collector turned and started walking away. Then stopped. "If payment isn't received..." His gaze swept across the apartment. "...we'll collect something else." The three men disappeared down the hallway. The door closed. Silence returned. A terrible silence. Mia finally spoke. "I'm sorry." Dante turned. "What?" "This is my fault." "No." "It is." "No." His voice came out sharper than he intended. Mia looked away. The academy.
